Chemical Properties
Sodium Hypochlorite:
- Good oxidizing agent
- Reacts with protic acids (e.g. HCl) to form salts while releasing toxic chlorine gas
- It also reacts with some acids to form hypochlorous acid (HClO)
- In water, it decomposes into sodium and chloride ions, as well as the powerful oxidizing agent, hydroxyl radical (OH.)
- NaClO also decomposes into sodium chloride and oxy
Acetic acid:
- Hygroscopic (tends to absorb moisture)
- Mixes with ethyl alcohol, glycerol, ether, carbon tetrachloride and water
- Reacts with oxidants and bases
- Concentrated acetic acid is corrosive and attacks many metals forming flammable or explosive gases
- Attacks some forms of plastic, rubber and coatings
